Packaging of the Month May: Sprout eyeliner with a „green“ secondary use
An eyeliner that turns into a plant? What at first sounds like a crazy fantasy story, Sprout has turned into reality with its waterproof kajal. That’s what we call a truly magical packaging of the month for May. But how does the Danish brand achieve this feat?
The two lives of the Sprout make-up liner
Sprout’s kajal is the world’s first and only implantable eyeliner. Initially, the product is intended to fulfil its role as a make-up liner. However, when the pencil has become too short for this, its life does not necessarily have to be over: If you want to help the environment, you can turn the eyeliner, which no longer fulfils its actual function, upside down and plant the stump in the garden. As a result, fragrant wildflowers grow from the eyeliner, which not only beautify the landscape but also serve as a food source for endangered bees. This is made possible by the seed capsule, which is located at the bottom of the pen and, like the lid, is made from recyclable sugar cane.
About the philosophy of the Sprout brand
When robotics students developed the idea of a plantable pen in 2013, Danish entrepreneur Michael Staushol was so enthusiastic about it that he secured the patent and worldwide rights to this innovation. He then founded Sprout and initially launched plantable pencils and later also make-up liners. The brand’s philosophy is that small innovations can bring about big changes. All Sprout pencils are made from 100 per cent non-toxic and biodegradable materials and are produced using sustainable methods. They are also vegan and cruelty-free. A cardboard folding box is used for the outer packaging.
Conclusion
The special composition of the Sprout eyeliner minimises waste after use. Instead, the pen has a second life as a plant, which is particularly beneficial for bees, which in turn are essential for the existence of us humans.
