Packaging of the Month June: Lip care in a cardboard stick
Up to now, lip care has mainly been available in the typical plastic stick. With the honey lip balm from its own Alterra Naturkosmetik brand, Rossmann is venturing onto new, more sustainable paths. “100% plastic-free” is so unusual for this type of product that we have chosen this innovation as Packaging of the Month for June.
Lip balm made from cardboard with push mechanism
The honey lip balm from Alterra Naturkosmetik comes in a cardboard stick. Due to the (environmentally) conscious choice of material, it was not possible to integrate the classic twist mechanism. Instead, the user presses the balm upwards from the base of the stick. This method of operation ensures similarly simple handling. Anyone who empties the cardboard pen can dispose of it in the waste paper – and thus make a small but valuable contribution to the circular economy and, as a result, to environmental protection.
Modern design of the outer packaging
Like the pen, the outer packaging is also made of cardboard. It is characterised by its modern design, which is aesthetically appealing and gets to the heart of the product’s special features and application. The simple yet expressive illustrations of honeycomb and manuka oil awaken the desire to buy. At the bottom right, a few words and an illustration explain how the lip balm works. The customer also recognises at first glance that the stick is made of cardboard thanks to the open packaging.
Natural lip care with organic beeswax
The most important ingredients of the honey lip balm are organically grown beeswax and manuka oil. The product also contains organic olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter to ensure gentle lip care. According to the manufacturer, the formula is free from microplastics.
Conclusion
From the outer packaging to the stick to the contents: the honey lip balm from Alterra Naturkosmetik is completely plastic-free. The stick in particular, which is made from cardboard but is still easy to use, stands out. It serves as another impressive example of how the packaging world has great potential to contribute to sustainability and environmental protection.
